What Is IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback (MCN)?

Micro Current Neurofeedback, also known as “MCN,” is a kind of therapeutic technology that assists the brain in rebooting itself. Using three Pico watts (which is three-trillionths of a watt and one-millionth the energy of a cell phone) to adjust fixed patterns in the brain, MCN promotes healing and clearing of the brain’s neural pathways, making it a beneficial treatment for a wide range of mental health symptoms.

The History And Development Of MCN

Neurofeedback has been used in the therapeutic community since the middle of the twentieth century. Originally developed using electroencephalography (EEG) to control certain parts of the brain, EEG neurofeedback pulsed energy through electrodes while a client focused on a specific image or task.

In 2012, however, Barry Bruder created a new device for neurofeedback, which involved a lower, more generalized dose of energy to enhance muscle relaxation and re-education. Since then, the company IASIS has developed Bruder’s noninvasive, FDA-registered Micro Current Neurofeedback system and certified clinicians across the globe in MCN.

IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback has been proven an effective treatment tool for a wide range of mental health issues and is safe for anyone of any age to use. In addition to common mental health symptoms like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, MCN has yielded positive results for clients struggling with other physical, cognitive, and neurological disorders. Memory challenges, insomnia, migraines, Lyme disease, and epilepsy are just some examples of challenges that have been treated using Micro Current Neurofeedback.

In fact, some studies estimate that close to 90 percent of MCN recipients report positive results. And whereas traditional neurofeedback often requires at least six months of treatment, the average client using IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback is likely to reach “enduring sustainability” after 10 to 20 sessions (one to three months).[1]

How Does Micro Current Neurofeedback Work?

Our brains have an amazing capability for morphing and adapting to both internal (body-based) and external (environmental) stimuli. Without this quality of neuroplasticity, we wouldn’t be able to develop past infancy or recover from brain injuries. Yet, because our brains are continually changing—and often in response to trauma—we can get stuck in certain patterns like sleeplessness and anxiousness that prevent us from functioning at our highest potential.

Micro Current Neurofeedback “bathes” the brain in low amounts of energy, effectively stimulating the brain’s ability to enact neuroplasticity or change neural pathways. This is done with small electrodes that an MCN clinician places on the skull to emit both positive and negative energy, targeting neurons in the brain. These currents are not physically detectable by the client and work to effectively disrupt “stuck” patterns in the brain. In essence, Micro Current Neurofeedback is a reboot of the brain’s neural pathways.

MCN is typically done more frequently in the initial weeks of treatment with the goal of elongating time between treatment periods to promote a sustained response. Micro Current Neurofeedback is administered by an IASIS-certified clinician, and talk therapy is not a component of MCN sessions; that happens separately and is determined by each unique individual treatment plan.

IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback At Our Practice

When I frist learned about MCN, I had some reservations regarding the passive nature of using electrodes and energy pulse and how enduringly effective it could be. Nevertheless, I chose to enroll in an IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback training to gain firsthand experience. My perspective shifted as I became increasingly more impressed with MCN’s effectiveness, especially after hearing positive feedback from clinicians who had been treated by MCN and/or who were on the same journey of incorporating the tool into their own wellness practices. After my training was complete I was able to witness first hand the positive results both personally and within the individuals in my personal circle leaving me further convinced of it’s potential to be a valuable tool in the journey to well being.

Traditional talk therapy remains an important and essential choice for individuals seeking to address their mental health challenges, I’m thrilled to present MCN as a distinct service within my therapy practice. MCN provides valuable support to a wide range of clients, potentially reducing the length of therapy sessions. MCN has the potential to produce a more resilient mental state and improved stress management which can aid clients in achieving:

  • Gains in mental and emotional clarity

  • Developing a more positive mood and attitude

  • Having deeper, more restorative sleep

  • Feeling more present and engaged

  • Better handle stress and stressors

  • Increases in cognitive function

  • Reducing compulsivity and impulsivity

  • Maintaining a greater sense of calm

  • Improving attention and focus

  • Stimulating creativity

  • Increases in energy

  • Fostering a deeper connection to self

  • Reduction in anxiety and panic

  • Better regulation of emotions

  • Experiencing less physical pain and discomfort

  • Tolerating triggers

  • Lifting brain fog

  • Reduction in depression

  • Regaining motivation to reach peak professional, academic, and athletic performance

  • Developing a greater sense of self-awareness

·       Increasing adaptability and stress management

As a highly effective means for harmonizing mind and body, encouraging a sense of calm, and reducing overall stress, MCN can benefit anyone of any age—from one to one hundred. By tapping into the brain’s ability to change itself, MCN allows clients to meaningfully return from a fight-or-flight trauma response and toward the path of healing.
